Susan Abrahams was born in Sydney and grew up amongst the inner west suburban hum. There were music, tennis and dance lessons and play dates with friends. But her greatest love was to climb a tree, nestle into the branches and get lost in the adventures of Enid Blyton.
Her very own magical faraway tree was never really far away, with a backyard full of jacarandas to climb and cascading ivy for fairies to hide in. Along one side was a paling fence laden in spring with the most wonderful jasmine, a scent that still stirs the happy optimism of being young.
Susan's love of books led to a love of writing. Little pieces of poetry and short stories littered her room and a notebook was never out of reach. Part-time work at bookshops, whilst at university, furthered her reading and dreams of writing.
After a whirl-wind European adventure and two years of working in London, Susan returned to Sydney. Her commerce degree then took her into the world of corporate finance where she held marketing roles for major corporations for over 20 years.
Having three children has been a wonderful adventure in itself, a rediscovery of the power of books to engage, educate and surprise. Becoming a member of The Hunter Writing Centre Children's Writing Group and the Children's Book Council of Australia has also affirmed her passion for connecting children to reading.
Lately, her writing has been inspired by her love of making art with her children. She is also writing about her extensive travels in a way that is accessible and interesting to kids. Living amongst a vibrant community is awash with creativity and ideas, has certainly inspired a new rhythm. There are always new adventures to be had, a new Nutritionist qualification, a new role as Chair of a University Research Centre of Excellence in children's nutrition. And of course, new trees to climb and explore with her children, ensuring the magic of the faraway tree is still, never far away.
